Terms & Conditions

Last updated: 13 August 2026

These terms explain how purchases from Smallprint Books work. Please read them before placing an order.

If you have any questions, contact us at contact@smallprint-online.com.

1. About us

This website is operated by Cilko Ltd, trading as Smallprint Books and Smallprint Online.

Cilko Ltd is registered in England and Wales under company number 13641028. Our registered office is:

2–8 Games Road
London
EN4 9HN
United Kingdom

You can contact us by emailing contact@smallprint-online.com or through our website contact form.

2. Who these terms apply to

These terms apply when you purchase products from our website.

A consumer is someone buying mainly for personal use rather than for a business, school, nursery or other organisation.

If you are purchasing wholly or mainly for a business, school, nursery or other organisation, you are a business customer. Some consumer cancellation rights described below may not apply to business purchases. Separate terms may also be agreed for larger, bespoke or invoiced orders.

By placing an order, you confirm that you are at least 18 years old or have permission from a parent or guardian to place the order.

3. Products and descriptions

We take reasonable care to describe and display our books and other products accurately.

Product images are for illustration. Colours may appear slightly different depending on your screen, and publishers may occasionally alter covers, dimensions or other minor details without notice.

Where an age range is provided, it is a general guide. Children develop at different rates, so adults should use their own judgement when choosing an appropriate book.

Nothing in these terms affects your legal rights if a product is faulty, not as described or otherwise unsatisfactory.

4. Placing an order

When you place an order, you are offering to buy the products in your basket under these terms.

You will normally receive an automatic email acknowledging your order. This acknowledgement does not necessarily mean that we have accepted the order.

A contract is formed when we confirm that your order has been accepted or dispatched.

We may be unable to accept an order because:

  • A product is unavailable.
  • Payment cannot be authorised.
  • There is an obvious error in the price or product description.
  • Delivery is not available to the address provided.
  • We reasonably suspect fraudulent or unauthorised activity.
  • An order exceeds a stated purchase limit.

If we cannot accept an order, we will let you know and refund any payment already taken.

Please check your order confirmation and contact us promptly if any details are incorrect.

5. Prices and payment

Prices are shown in pounds sterling.

Any applicable taxes and delivery charges will be displayed before you complete checkout. Delivery charges vary according to the contents, weight and destination of the order.

We may change prices at any time, but changes will not affect an order that we have already accepted.

If an obvious pricing error is discovered before we accept your order, we will contact you. You may then purchase the product at the correct price or cancel the order for a full refund.

Payment must be made using one of the payment methods offered at checkout. Available methods may change from time to time.

Payments are processed securely by Shopify and our payment providers. We do not receive or store your complete payment-card details.

For school, nursery, book-club or other approved invoiced orders, payment must be made by the date stated on the invoice.

6. Availability

All orders are subject to availability.

Occasionally, a product may become unavailable after an order has been placed. If this happens, we will contact you and offer an appropriate alternative where possible or refund the unavailable item.

We will not substitute a product without your agreement.

7. Delivery

We normally dispatch orders within two working days. Orders placed during weekends or bank holidays will be processed from the next working day.

UK orders are sent using Royal Mail or another suitable courier. Royal Mail deliveries usually arrive within one to three working days after dispatch, although these times are estimates and cannot be guaranteed.

Available delivery options, costs and international destinations are shown at checkout. Further information is available on our Delivery & Returns page.

Please provide a complete and accurate delivery address. We are not responsible for delays or additional costs caused by incorrect or incomplete information supplied by you.

If a parcel is returned because the address was incorrect, incomplete or the parcel was not collected, we may ask you to pay the reasonable cost of sending it again.

Responsibility for the products passes to you when they are delivered to you, to the delivery address, or to a person or safe place nominated by you.

If delivery is significantly delayed, please contact us. Your legal rights concerning late or failed delivery are not affected.

8. Cancelling before dispatch

If you wish to cancel or change an order before dispatch, email contact@smallprint-online.com as soon as possible.

We will try to stop the order, but this may not be possible once it has entered the packing or delivery process. If it has already been dispatched, you can use the cancellation and returns process below.

9. Your right to cancel an online order

If you are a consumer, you normally have the right to cancel an online order without giving a reason.

You must tell us that you wish to cancel within 14 days beginning the day after you receive the goods. If one order is delivered in separate parcels, the period begins the day after you receive the final parcel.

To cancel, email contact@smallprint-online.com with your name, order number and a clear statement that you wish to cancel. You may also use the model cancellation form at the end of these terms.

After notifying us, you must return the goods within a further 14 days.

Cancellation rights may not apply to certain products, including goods made to your specification or clearly personalised, unless they are faulty or not as described.

10. Returning an unwanted product

Unless the product is faulty, damaged or incorrect, you are responsible for the cost of returning it.

Please package returned products carefully and obtain proof of posting. You are responsible for the products until they are received by us.

You may inspect a product as you would in a shop. We may reduce a refund if handling beyond what is reasonably necessary has reduced the product’s value.

Original packaging should be included where reasonably possible, but its absence does not automatically remove your statutory cancellation rights.

Please contact us before returning anything so that we can provide the correct return address and instructions.

11. Refunds for cancelled orders

For a valid consumer cancellation, we will refund:

  • The price paid for the returned products.
  • The cost of our least expensive standard delivery service available for the order.

If you selected a more expensive delivery option, such as an upgraded or express service, the additional cost is not refundable.

Refunds will normally be made to the original payment method within 14 days of receiving the returned products or, where applicable, receiving evidence that they have been sent back.

We may withhold the refund until we receive the products or evidence of return, whichever occurs first.

Your bank or payment provider may take additional time to show the refund in your account.

12. Faulty, damaged or incorrect products

Products must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described.

If an item arrives damaged, faulty or incorrect, contact contact@smallprint-online.com as soon as reasonably possible. Please include your order number, a description of the problem and photographs where helpful.

Depending on the circumstances and your legal rights, we will arrange an appropriate refund, replacement or other remedy.

If we ask you to return a faulty, damaged or incorrect product, we will cover reasonable return-postage costs or provide suitable return instructions.

Consumers may have a short-term legal right to reject faulty goods within 30 days. Further rights may continue after that period.

Nothing in these terms limits your statutory rights.

13. Exchanges and gifts

Exchanges are subject to product availability. Where a direct exchange is not possible, we may ask you to return the original item for a refund and place a new order.

Refunds for gifts will normally be made to the original purchaser using the original payment method. Any alternative arrangement is at our discretion and may require the agreement of the purchaser.

14. Subscriptions

Where a product is offered as a subscription, the frequency, price and renewal information will be displayed on the product page or at checkout.

By purchasing a recurring subscription, you authorise the applicable payment provider to collect the stated recurring payments until the subscription is cancelled.

Cancellation instructions will be provided with the subscription. A cancellation must be made before the next payment is processed to prevent the next order. Orders that have already been processed remain subject to the cancellation and returns rights described in these terms.

15. Promotions and discount codes

Promotions and discount codes are subject to any additional conditions stated with the offer.

Unless otherwise stated:

  • A discount code cannot be exchanged for cash.
  • Only one discount code may be used per order.
  • A code must be entered before checkout is completed.
  • A discount cannot normally be applied retrospectively.
  • Promotions may be withdrawn or amended where there is a genuine error, misuse or other reasonable cause.

Your statutory rights are not affected.

16. Our responsibility to consumers

We are responsible for losses that are a foreseeable result of our breach of these terms or failure to use reasonable care and skill.

We are not responsible for losses that were not foreseeable when the contract was formed or for business losses arising from a consumer purchase.

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability where doing so would be unlawful, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation.

17. Business customers

If you are purchasing wholly or mainly for a business, school, nursery or other organisation:

  • Consumer cancellation rights may not apply.
  • Any delivery date is an estimate unless we expressly agree otherwise in writing.
  • We are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, loss of profit, revenue, business or opportunity.
  • Our total liability relating to an order will not normally exceed the total amount paid for that order, except where liability cannot legally be limited.
  • Products remain our property until payment has been received in full.

Nothing in this section excludes liability that cannot legally be excluded.

18. Events outside our control

We are not responsible for delays or failure caused by events outside our reasonable control, such as postal disruption, severe weather, transport interruption, supplier failure, system outage or other emergency.

We will take reasonable steps to minimise the effect and will contact you if an order is materially affected. Your statutory rights concerning delayed or failed delivery remain unaffected.

19. Privacy and cookies

We handle personal information in accordance with our Privacy Policy.

Our website uses essential cookies and, with the required permission, optional cookies and similar technologies. Cookie preferences can be managed using the cookie controls on the website.

20. Website content and intellectual property

The content and design of this website, excluding material owned by publishers or other third parties, belongs to or is licensed to Smallprint Books.

You may use the website for personal shopping and information. You must not copy, reproduce, sell or commercially exploit its content without permission.

21. Complaints

We hope to resolve any problem quickly and fairly.

Please send complaints to contact@smallprint-online.com, including your name, order number and details of the issue.

These terms do not affect your right to use any other dispute-resolution or legal remedy available to you.

22. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms when our services, business practices or legal obligations change.

The terms applying to an order are those in force when the order is placed. The latest version will be published on our website with its revision date.

23. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales.

If you are a consumer resident elsewhere in the United Kingdom, you retain any mandatory rights provided by the law where you live and may bring proceedings in your local courts.
